Choosing a new boiler can feel overwhelming, but it really comes down to a few key questions about your home and how you use hot water. Here’s a clear, jargon-free guide to help you pick with confidence.

1. Start with your home and household

The best boiler for a one-bedroom flat is rarely the best for a four-bedroom family home. Before looking at brands, think about the size of your property, how many bathrooms you have, and how often you run more than one tap or shower at the same time. These factors matter far more than the badge on the front.

2. Understand the three boiler types

There are three main types of gas boiler in UK homes:

  • Combi boilers heat water on demand straight from the mains. Compact and efficient, they suit smaller homes with one bathroom.
  • System boilers store hot water in a cylinder, so they can supply several outlets at once, ideal for busier family homes.
  • Regular (conventional) boilers use a cylinder and a loft tank, and often suit older properties or homes with very high hot-water demand.

Our combi vs system vs regular guide compares them in more detail.

3. Get the sizing right

Bigger is not better. An oversized boiler cycles on and off inefficiently and costs more to buy and run, while an undersized one struggles to keep up. Correct sizing is based on your home’s heat loss and hot-water demand, something a good engineer will assess properly rather than guess.

4. Prioritise efficiency and controls

All new gas boilers sold in the UK are high-efficiency condensing models, and under the Boiler Plus standard they must achieve at least 92% ErP efficiency with time and temperature controls. Good controls, a programmer, a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves, make a real difference to both comfort and bills.

5. Consider the warranty

Manufacturer warranties range from a couple of years to ten or more. A longer warranty gives you real reassurance, but usually depends on annual servicing by a registered engineer, so factor that in.

6. Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer

Whichever boiler you choose, it must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, it’s the law. They’ll also notify Building Control and commission the boiler correctly.
